Swedish Massage Therapy
Swedish Massage Therapy is the most popular and familiar massage technique being practiced today. It also serves as a foundation for many other forms of massage. The five basic strokes of Swedish massage are: Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Tapotement and Vibration.
Swedish Massage has many benefits. One of the most primary goals of Swedish massage is to ease muscle tension and create total relaxation There are other benefits that Swedish Massage offers such as stimulating blood circulation, loosening of joints and improving range of motion, calming the nervous system, firming up muscles and skin tone, improving lymphatic drainage and the release of toxins, and relieving symptoms for disorders such as asthma, carpal tunnel, headaches, temporomandibular joint dysfunction(TMJ), Sciatica, arthritis, myofascial pain, and athletic injuries.
During the massage session the client lies unclothed on a heated massage table and is draped with a sheet and blanket for warmth and to maintain professional standards. A very light natural oil or lotion is used to allow for the therapist to properly administer the various massage techniques. A Swedish massage session typically lasts one-hour to 90 minutes and can be light, medium, or deep pressure. One-hour is sufficient for simple relaxation and 90 minutes is preferred for those clients who need extra work to address specific chronic issues or excessive muscle tension.
Please discuss with your therapist before scheduling your appointment what your needs and goals are for your session. Proper communication between client and therapist is important to ensure these goals and issues are addressed properly and so the therapist can offer any additional recommendations.
