CranioSacral Therapy
A gentle manipulation, which locates and corrects imbalances in the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, Dural membrane, cranial bones, and the sacrum. It is a closed hydraulic system that moves with minimal but perceptible rhythmic fluctuation. The craniosacral system exists in humans and all animals with a brain and spinal cord. It develops with the fetus and functions until death. Sensory, motor or intellectual dysfunctions may result from imbalances within this system.
Using a very light touch, no more than the weight of a nickel, the therapist can feel the rhythmic pulsations of the cerebrospinal fluid. Gentle manipulations at the sutures and subtle adjustments release tension from the membranes and the entire system, allowing the body to self-correct.
An evaluation of a client can be made by gently placing the hands on the head, sacrum & tailbone area. A low amplitude of cerebrospinal rhythm indicates low vitality and low resistance to disease. A symmetry in the craniosacral rhythmical motion throughout the body is used to localize pathologies. Although this sign does not explain what the problem is or its cause, it will alert the therapist where the problem lies.
CranioSacral Therapy is used to treat numerous ailments. Used alone, or in conjunction with other bodywork, it can treat temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ), headaches, eye and ear problems, stiff neck and spine, whiplash, fatigue, depression, pelvic disorders, and gastrointestinal complaints.
The pediatric application has been particularly successful in treating dyslexia and other learning disabilities, hyperactivity, and cerebral palsy.
CranioSacral Therapy is practiced by a wide variety of healthcare professionals. They include osteopathic physicians, medical doctors, chiropractors, doctors of Oriental medicine, naturopathic physicians, nurses, psychiatric specialists, psychologists, dentists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, acupuncturists, massage therapists, and other professional bodyworkers.
