Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu is a unique and ancient Japanese healing art, which means "finger pressure". It emanates from the same oriental tradition as acupuncture and acupressure. Instead of needles, however, the hands, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees, and even feet, are used to massage and stimulate energy pathways, also known as meridians, flow through the body, thereby harmonizing the body's vital energy known as Ki.

Acupressure and gentle stretching is the basic movements for Shiatsu and can be done either on a massage table or on a futon or Thai Matt on the floor. For clients who prefer a more traditional approach and often deeper pressure, the floor method is recommended. Either way, the client is fully clothed and no oils or lotions are used. Comfortable clothing such as yoga pants, sweatpants and a t-shirt is preferred.

Unlike Acupuncture or acupressure massage, which concentrate on specific points, Shiatsu treats the entire meridian or energy pathway. The Shiatsu practitioner looks for imbalances along these pathways and by stimulating the areas of imbalance, hopes to regulate or balance the energy within that channel.

A Shiatsu session can focus on general meridian stimulation and general overall relaxation or can be more therapeutic in nature by focusing on specific health ailments and the meridians directly affected by them. While receiving a Shiatsu session it is not unusual for a person to experience an emotional release. Often times, emotions, old thoughts, and memories can be locked up in the soft tissue of the body. While releasing muscle tension in the tissues, these thoughts can release, as well.

Shiatsu has many beneficial effects. In addition to balancing ki energy and the five elements to prevent disease, this ancient system, reduces muscle tension, promotes functioning of the internal organs, and is useful in treating symptoms or specific chronic conditions. Shiatsu is deeply relaxing, reduces anxiety and often leaves the client feeling peaceful and calm.
